The Shatner Show
"Who am I to stand in the way of all these fine artists and artisans who want to use my lumpy, aging face for inspiration? Some creators love a great sunset; some have in mind my bloodshot eyes. Nevertheless, out of awe, amusement, or pity, you should come and see this unique show." — WILLIAM SHATNER ON THE SHATNER SHOW, 2007
76 ARTISTS INTERPRET THE LIFE AND CAREER OF WILLIAM SHATNER, POP CULTURE ICON
'Thesbian" : William Shatner | Clay, Limestone, Plumbing pipes, ferns | 14" X 14" X 22"
"I’d even been honored as the subject of an entire art show – about seventy six artists created original pieces about me for an exhibition and book called The Shatner Show…. It is an astonishing collection, with pieces made from a variety of materials - including a bust made of LEGOs and another one of clay, limestone, artificial ferns, and plumbing pieces. So I’ve seen myself in plastic and plumbing."
"UP TIL NOW! THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY : WILLIAM SHATNER"
I worked on a Film starring William Shatner. Shortly afterwards I participated in the Shatner Show.
Images of Mr. Shatner are all over the internet at different ages, different angles. In the end I relied on memory of watching him on set, and creating a hybrid of various "mid-age" images I collected.
Here Mr. Shatner is featured as a thespian, referring to his beginnings as an actor on stage. The plumbing pipes bring water up to the ferns on his head so they can grow (figuratively speaking). A little humour for a very funny man.
Mention of this piece made it into his Autobiography : "Up Til Now!".
