THE QUICK VERSION
DESIGN FOR FILM
For almost 2 decades, I've worked on full-run Hollywood film and television productions as an Art Director and Assistant Art Director, as well as Graphic Designer, often creating vast amounts of graphics, and aiding in the conceptualization and design of film sets and locations, builds and props. The list of productions include those by producers:
Dreamworks (Spielberg), Disney, Warner Bros., MGM Studios, Ridley Scott, MTV, Brad Pitt, (Plan B Entertainment), FX, CBS, Discovery Channel, Lifetime Television, the Cohen Brothers, and more.
As a Production Designer on smaller feature films (Designing the look and sets for film), I received an AMPIA nomination for Production Design and received a Golden Sheaf Award for an Art Film Short that was showcased at the MOMA New York.
More recently, I worked on the first and second seasons of the acclaimed MGM Studios TV Miniseries, Fargo, winner of 18 Emmy Award Nominations and 3 Emmy Wins for the first season, and 36 Emmy nominations including a Primetime Emmy Nomination for Production Design, and 2 Emmy wins for the second season.
Fargo the TV series was conceived by Warren Littlefield former producer of NBC for 20 years, It is written and co-Produced by Noah Hawley and the Cohen Brothers. It captures the quality and flavour of the original Fargo Film of 1996. Each Season holds a new story line and a new cast of characters.
Fargo the TV Series in total won over 160 award nominations between the first two seasons which also included a number of Golden Globe awards including Best Television Film or Miniseries. Other awards included a Critics Choice award, American Film Institute Award, Dorian Award, and a Peabody Award.
I came onto Fargo Season 1 as a Graphic Designer for our hero props and set needs, and by Season 2 was involved heavily in designing the look of some of our sets as an Assistant Art Director. I was nominated for Contribution to Excellence in Production Design for both seasons of Fargo, by the Art Directors Guild Awards (ADG) out of LA, Hollywood. In Season 2 my involvement included designing parts or all, of the exterior looks for a handful of the hero sets, as well as the exterior shops/streets of fictional Luverne MN.
Especially heavy was my involvement in the exterior look of the iconic set for Season 2, “The Waffle Hut” and “Bud’s Meats”. My involvement also included contributing to the design of a few interior locations transformed to our film needs. There were large amounts of interior and exterior graphics as well, for the sets and for designing our hero Props. Season 2 won a Primetime Creative Emmy nomination for Production Design, meaning for the design and look of the film.
The Series hosted a long string of notable stars, including Martin Freeman, BillyBob Thornton, Colin Hanks, Oliver Platt, Adam Goldberg, Jeffrey Donovan, Patrick Wilson, Adam Arkin, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemens, Jean Smart, Patrick Williams, Ted Danson, Brad Garrett, Kieran Culkin, among others.
I've been honoured to receive a third nomination for Contribution to Excellence in Production Design by the Art Directors Guild, for a Spielberg Series of Films for Television. On this production, as the Principal Researcher for the Series, I communicated our design research directly to Mr. Spielberg. This production was also nominated for a Primetime Creative Emmy for Production Design.
I will add one more experience that seems relevant in the AUArts community. In 2002 I participated as an Art Director/Designer with an Aboriginal Screenwriters Workshop at the Banff Center for the Arts. This program was initiated by Jordan Wheeler, Writer and Story Editor on the 90’s television series, North of 60.
Aboriginal applicants were selected from across North American to participate in a Screenwriting intensive for episodic television. In smaller time portions, applicants participated over a period of 3 years to create their own Bible for episodic. In this workshop a film crew was assembled to shoot one episode from each of the final Bibles, which was then showcased. Aboriginal film Interns worked alongside seasoned Aboriginal film veterans and local film crew. Sets and props were created, actors were cast, a director hired, and footage was edited with sound.
It is the stories in the episodes however, that were impactful and in many ways haunt me to this day, as they were an authentic window into a world that is kept well hidden.
AGENCY DESIGN + ADVERTISING
I’ve worked in the agency world for one of Western Canada's largest design/advertising firms as well as working on contract for others including an international agency with a local office (Ogilvy & Mather). For Ogilvy & Mather I desgined their website, and worked with the advertising team creating ads for Telus. I was offered a position with them to set up a Design Department within their advertising agency.
I’ve worked in various applications, including but not limited to: Web Design, Branding, Corporate Annual Reports, Packaging Design, Advertising, Magazine Design/Art Direction, Motion Graphics, and Film Title Design (and film credits design, film poster design).
Through a one-person studio over the years, I’ve also serviced clients, sometimes teaming up with other creatives and/or freelance Account Executives. Much of this work was for Oil & Gas, the entertainment sector, or for small startups and local businesses.
For example, one startup company was ready to launch a new product. They had developed a natural medicinal active ingredient with Health Canada, which was highly anti-viral with strong antibacterial properties. It was a successful treatment for Shingles, Cold Sores, Strep Throat, etc and was given a “DIN Number” qualifying it as a medical product. There was talk of this ingredient becoming a solution to antiobiotic resistance. This product required branding, and creating the packaging design.
They required a website, which was designed with an animated ad at the front end. There was also point of purchase material, collateral, and the usual stationary and digital needs. This product was sold in most pharmacies across Canada.
FINE ART PRACTICE
As a practicing visual artist, I work with conceptual and figurative sculpture applications, video documentary, and large-scale photo based work. I am particularly interested in story.
In 2008, I received an Alberta Foundation for the Arts Visual Arts Project Grant in the sum of $6,000 to document the stories of New Immigrants to Canada in Video and in Sculpture, ones who came from difficult pasts. My studio has resided with the Burns Visual Arts Society (BVAS) for the past 6 years, one of Canada’s oldest Artist Co-ops. The Glenbow Museum has archived our work.
I’ve recently shown conceptual sculpture work in New York in a Juried show, and have had representation locally in our Calgary Galleries, for sculpture and photography. As an alumni of the New York Studio School (Sculpture), I was asked to start a Canadian Chapter.
I studied Drawing with a Professor from the Academy of Leningrad, Russia, and have passed on this master drawing knowlege to teens, via teaching CBE art curriculum at a Calgary private school, rated in the top 10 in Canada for academics, as well as through the summer Continuing Education Program with AUArts. I have also taught Figurative Clay sculpture (adult) through AUArts Continuing Education and through the Red Deer College Summer Series.
For the Calgary private school, I helped orchestrate a school-wide project based learning exhibition for which I brought in film personnel to work with the students on their designs and construction. The resulting exhibition culminated in Channel 2&7 Media coverage, and a Press Conference at the School by the Former Ministry of Education. I also organized a cultural/arts trip to New York for the Art10-30 students. I taught there for one year during a Screenwriter’s strike in the film industry.

“Up Till Now! The Autobiography | William Shatner” | "I’d even been honored as the subject of an entire art show – about seventy six artists created original pieces about me for an exhibition and book called The Shatner Show…. It is an astonishing collection, with pieces made from a variety of materials - including a bust made of LEGOs and **another one of clay, limestone, artificial ferns, and plumbing pieces. So I’ve seen myself in plastic and **plumbing."
**William Shatner makes reference to my sculpture of him for the Shatner Show, in his autobiography.
